Truck Care Winter Tips to Help Pro-Drivers Deliver the Holidays

America’s trucks are working vigorously to deliver all the gifts, food and decorations that make the winter holidays so special. As they transport all of these packages, it is important to be prepared for winter travel and have a reliable place to stop if needed while on the road.

Our Truck Care team strives to make the lives of drivers easier while on the road with roadside assistance and on-site support at our Service Centers.

We recommend the below tips to help prepare for winter weather and stay safe this holiday season:

Tips to Keep Drivers Safe/Prepared this Winter:

  • Be absolutely certain that a thorough pre-trip inspection is performed before you leave.
    • Test the defroster and heater for proper operation.
    • Windshield wipers should be replaced and winter blades recommended in inclement weather.  Verify that the wiper motor is fully functional and the washer fluid is topped off.
    • Drain moisture from all air tanks.  Only use pure methanol alcohol in alcohol evaporators as the most effective way to prevent air brake freeze-up’s in the air brake system.
    • Windows, windshield and mirrors are completely clean before departure.
    • If winter temperatures are below 30 degrees add a fuel supplement to prevent against fuel gelling and fuel-filter icing.  Use a fuel supplement like Diesel 9-1-1 to reliquify gelled fuel and de-ice frozen fuel-filters if your vehicle will not start or gain power in cold weather.
    • Keep fuel tanks topped off.  This will provide extra weight over the drive tires to aid with traction.
    • Driver tires should have deep lugs and operated at proper inflations. Tire conditions are essential for good traction for the best, safe winter driving.
  • When you’re able to stop in a safe place, clear the lights off of snow and ice. Brake, tail and head lights are especially important to be free of debris.  Lighting is vital, more than ever when visibility is poor. Keep everything clean, so you can BE SEEN.
