Before every race, every competitor, track worker and fan stands at attention for the national anthem. For me, it’s a time of reflection right before climbing into my Pilot Flying J car and racing for 500 miles. It helps when I’m able to clear my mind, but it’s easy to get lost in what “The Star-Spangled Banner” represents: the fight for freedom.
Today is Veteran’s Day in America, which means a lot to me. Since my early years in the lower NASCAR circuits, I’ve seen members of the military – both current members and veterans – around tracks across the country, enjoying our events with their families. I’ve met with them, talked with them and related to them. They’re as down to Earth as you and me, but they also represent the best of America. Veterans have served their country, taking on tasks that are sometimes unimaginable and, God willing, they return home to normalcy, taking on jobs and settling into a more civilized way of life.
The least we can do is express our gratitude, if only for a day. I try my best to do that every weekend at the track. Some of NASCAR’s biggest fans have served our country and fought for the very freedom that allows us to participate in a sport for a living. I’m spoiled, and that’s partly because our military protects us so well.
I salute our veterans on this special day. If you know one, or come across one today, be sure to thank them for the years of service in an effort to make our beautiful country a better place to live.
To our service men and women, both past and present, I wish you a happy Veteran’s Day and a sincere THANK YOU!
