Preparing for Winter Travel

As cooler temperatures slowly spread across North America, preparing for winter weather is becoming top of mind for most of us and you can’t start preparing too early. Since winter weather can be a bit hard to predict, we recommend always traveling with an emergency kit. In case you encounter inclement weather or an unplanned stop on your route, here are some items we recommend having on hand for your winter travels:

• Properly fitting tire chains
• Bag of sand or salt
• Traction mats
• Snow shovel
• Snow brush
• Ice scraper
• Booster cables
• Warning devices such as flares or emergency lights
• Fuel line de-icer (methanol, also called methyl alcohol or methyl hydrate)
• Flashlight and a portable flashing light (don’t forget extra batteries)
• Blanket
• Extra clothing, including hat, wind-proof pants, socks and warm footwear
• First aid kit
