Promoting learning and development for our team members is central to our people-first culture. By investing in the growth of our team members, we are able to help fuel their journey and yours – creating a great experience at every stop.
To demonstrate this commitment, we have grown our training, learning, and development functions considerably over the past decade. Our robust development program was recently recognized by Training magazine, which for 20 years has presented awards to organizations with the most successful learning and development programs in the world. Earning 66th place in this year’s 2020 Training Top 100 finalists is a true testament to our team’s ability to adapt and solve the “right” problems.
Our Talent Development team has played a critical role throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure team members continue to receive the training they need to support our guests and stores. Through our Learning Management System, leaders and team members have been kept updated about COVID regulations, mask mandates, and enhanced cleaning procedures. The trainings have also helped team members learn how to empathetically and professionally support our guests through such difficult times.
For team members at our Sales and Support Center, we had to quickly adapt to be a virtually-based workforce. One of the many programs that had to be adapted was our new Virtual Hiring Orientation, which is critical to ensure we set up our new hires for success. We added a virtual meeting, “Pit Stop with Paul,” where new team members are able to meet and connect with our Chief People Officer, Paul Shore.
When we welcome new leaders to Pilot, virtual orientation also includes a “New Team Assimilation” plan, which establishes frequent check-ins with their team members to build trust and establish strong communications.
“New Team Assimilation helped me set the stage for trust and open dialogue within my team and led to a number of actionable takeaways. My team and I both walked away with nothing but positive reviews of the experience, and I have since aimed to integrate this type of feedback into our team routines and culture,” said Lucy Fortune, senior manager of food and beverage.
By building strong teams and growing people, the Talent Development team helps promote a great work environment and a great experience for our guests. We are thankful for their hard to work to make sure that team members are still able to connect, learn and grow even in a virtual setting.
