Those that road-trip frequently can agree on this: The best part of a road trip is often the meals along the way. Unfortunately, it can also be the most time-consuming and costly. Considering the fact that my race team consists of a shop crew, pit crew, spotter, owner and an always-hungry driver, that’s usually the case.
Thank heavens for Pilot and Flying J stores, because for us, eating on the road has become so much easier and more cost-effective without sacrificing quality.
We all have our own picks, too. During the week, my pit crew undergoes an extensive training regimen and sticks to a strict diet so that they can optimally perform come race day. It helps that they don’t have to settle for junk food. Pilot and Flying J offer salads, fresh fruit and other healthy options that allow them to stay true to their training. I need those guys working their best each race. Every position counts and a smart diet helps them focus and perform faster.
Life is a little bit easier for our shop crew. They like to eat healthy as well, but they’ll enjoy sneaking in the occasional donut or candy bar. Since they’re engineers and mechanics and aren’t necessarily tasked with going over the pit wall during a race, they aren’t restricted to the same food options as the pit crew. A quick sandwich or slice of pizza always seems to hit the spot for them when they stop at a Pilot or Flying J.
My owner, Tommy Baldwin, certainly has a sweet tooth and fortunately for him, the candy options are expansive. I wouldn’t put it past him to go the “king size” route for his favorite chocolate bar. For as much as he works – this race team is his baby, after all – I can’t blame him for wanting a sugar rush sometimes. Operating a race team looks exhausting!
As for me, I don’t have any favorites. While I always make sure I’m not eating heavily right before a race – I sweat out everything I put in – I don’t adhere to a diet or food guidelines. I go with my gut, and that usually leads me to picking some healthy options like a salad. But I like knowing that when I’m in the mood, I can grab a slice of pizza or a bag of beef jerky (both have plenty of protein, right?).
The Pilot and Flying J network is convenient for our hauler’s travel, but it’s as equally as convenient to our dietary needs. I’m grateful that, whenever we drive to a track, I know there is a wide variety available to me and my crew at Pilot and Flying J.
