Driver Appreciation Month Continues with U.S. Navy Veteran David Acosta

In honor of Driver Appreciation Week, Sept. 15-21, Pilot Flying J is celebrating Driver Appreciation Month throughout September, offering double MyRewards points on fuel purchases and giveaways for our professional driver customers. During this time, we will also feature certain drivers who embody everything Pilot Flying J represents. Today we’d like to tell you about David Acosta – a husband, father, Navy veteran and professional driver.

Life’s Curve Balls

David Acosta struggled the past few years with the financial burden of providing for his single-income family. His wife takes care of their two daughters, 18-year-old Shequina and 17-year-old Amanda, who suffers from nephrotic syndrome – a deadly kidney disorder.

The U.S. Navy veteran fell in love with driving because of the freedom it provided, and the feeling of belonging to something. Unfortunately, the recession took a toll on his livelihood, and he lost his truck. However, David got his second chance to make a living as a professional driver after applying to the Back on the Roadcompetition.

On the Road Again

In 2011, David was the proud winner of the aptly named Back on the Road contest that was created to help exemplary drivers, who have lost their truck through circumstances beyond their control, get back on the road. His prize package included a 2007 Volvo VNL 780 18 wheel tractor-trailer, a one-year work agreement with Heartland Express and a variety of other products and services including monthly gas cards.

“I am grateful for the chance to work again, but not at just any job – a job I love,” said Acosta.

Pilot Flying J is a very proud sponsor of the Back on the Road competition, helping people like David get their life back on track and moving forward.

In honor of Driver Appreciation Month, we are pleased to offer double MyRewards points on fuel purchases and the chance to win one of many giveaways. To learn more about Pilot Flying J’s Driver Appreciation Month, visit www.pilotflyingj.com/driver-appreciation.
