Ready for better opportunities, better perks, and better benefits with a company responsible for fueling millions of journeys every day? Our recruiters are here to help, and they know what makes applicants stand out, regardless of the position or background. Part-time to full-time, cashiers to IT experts, shift gears with these steps and go from being a job seeker to happily employed.
Seven steps to fueling better careers:
1) Be visible – Update your LinkedIn profile. Mark that you’re job searching. Connect, update, post, and communicate. Recruiters are constantly sourcing from LinkedIn and need to be able to find you, notice you and appreciate what you bring to the table – at a glance. Research yourself online and see what you find.
2) Reimagine your resume – Don’t use automated resume templates, which aren’t easily searchable. Use bullets to make it easy to scan; use action verbs to illustrate your accomplishments; and always keep it succinct and to the point. Include any relevant experience, especially if you’re a young job seeker, even if it was in a volunteer position, in school, or on a sports team. Get a second set of eyes on your resume to ensure you’re putting your best foot forward.
3) Take the initiative – Visit a physical retail location and ask to speak to the hiring manager or follow up with the person who interviewed you. Contact us on LinkedIn, so we recognize your name among 100 resumes. You don’t want to get lost in the shuffle of applicants, and we appreciate you being proactive. Express your continued interest and put the ball in our court.
4) Envision your future – Have you visited the store or restaurant where you want to work? Have you explored the company website and social media? We can tell when someone knows the organization and has envisioned their future here – and when someone hasn’t. We want candidates who are a good fit for the job and think it’s a good fit for them. Show us that you’re eager and informed.
5) Answer and ask – Research the company before the interview, prepare your interview responses, and come ready with three questions you have for us. It’s appropriate to ask about benefits; it shows us that you appreciate the position’s value beyond base pay, and we look for team members who are ready to build careers.
6) Win the interview –Be professional, on time, and enthusiastic. Bring copies of your resume. Be honest and transparent. It’s OK to talk about obstacles or setbacks you’ve had if you also explain how you’ve overcome them. Know your strengths and your weaknesses. People will hire you for your attitude and then train your skills.
7) Don’t burn bridges – Sometimes, it doesn’t work out with the initial job application, but I may have something else that’s a better fit in a few months. Build a relationship with me and stay in contact.
Whatever path you choose, put your best foot forward by taking the time to review, research, and prepare. You’ll stand out as we look for the best candidates to join our team by showing us your personal best. If you put in the effort pursuing the job, we trust that you’ll put in the effort once you’ve got the job.
