Summer Intern Series: Team Building and Development

Over the last few weeks, our interns have been participating in fun development and team building activities. Through these experiences, we’ve shared our culture and the importance of working together through activities like volunteering and a ropes course.

This week, our interns are from many different departments at Pilot Flying J: Fleet Maintenance, Talent Acquisition, Supply & Distribution, Wholesale, Business Intelligence, Logistics and Corporate Accounting. We asked them:

What has been your favorite activity so far?

Brady Sartain University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Fleet Maintenance

My favorite thing I’ve done with Talent Development was definitely the ropes course because I really enjoyed doing the different tasks with my group. It was a fun experience doing the challenges together, and it allowed me to get to know my team better which has made this summer even more enjoyable!

Business Intelligence

If I had to pick a favorite, it would be the volunteer day. Our group worked with AmeriCorps at Seven Islands State Birding Park where we helped to remove invasive plant species from the area. Getting out in the sunshine and fresh air, everyone chatting and getting to know each other while enjoying nature and helping out at a fairly “young” state park was a great experience.

Talent Acquisition

I have loved every fun activity we have gotten to do as an intern group so far, but my favorite has to be winning a game of bowling at Main Event during orientation week! Getting to know the people here has been made so amazing by the people on the Talent Development team, because they have made me feel like I have a place here.

Elizabeth Nichols University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Business Intelligence

I really enjoyed the Department Trade Show where we got to learn about many of the different departments. Everyone was so open to share about their projects and it was really neat to see the complexities of the business side of Pilot Flying J.

Kal Bowden University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Supply & Distribution

Completing the ropes course at the start of the internship was a great way to create unity within the group of interns.  The course brought everyone together as we demonstrated effective communication in a fun way to complete each obstacle.

Kaylee Justice University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Wholesale

My favorite thing I’ve done with Talent Development was the ropes course. This allowed us to get to know one another, and helped us all work together as a team.

Kishan Tailor University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Business Intelligence

My favorite activity with the talent development team has most definitely been the resume workshop. It is very comforting knowing that here at Pilot Flying J the company cares about your future as much as they care about your present.

Lucas Pilla University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Logistics

My favorite activity with Talent Development was volunteering with the Volunteer Ministry Center. I believe it helped all of us gain a perspective on the importance of selflessness and giving back to our community.

Tanner Whetsel University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Corporate Accounting

My favorite thing I’ve done with Talent Development has been the mock interview and resume day. I appreciate that they sat down with us individually to give us insight and tips to help us with our resume and interview skills.

We’re so glad that our interns have enjoyed their experience with us and are sad that next week concludes this summer’s internship program!
