It is week 4 of the summer internship program at Pilot Flying J and we are excited to introduce you to another group of our awesome interns!
This week, our interns are from several departments: Financial Planning, Fuel Accounting, Accounts Receivable, Internal Audit and Miscellaneous Income. We spoke with them and asked how it’s been going and what their day-to-day job looks like. Here is what they said:

Internal Audit
The onboarding process was very valuable and well planned. Pilot did a great job of making us feel like an important part of the team explaining Pilot’s mission and goals, teaching us all the parts of a corporation and how they all work together and helping interns get to know each other quickly and work effectively as a team. My team members have been very helpful and have done a great job getting me up to speed, so I feel like I’ve been able to provide a real help. I’m really enjoying my time here!

Financial Planning & Analysis
Working in this department has been a blast so far! Like with everything at Pilot, the people are what make the difference. Everybody in our office has been extremely nice, and has gone out of their way to introduce themselves and make me and Malik, a fellow intern, feel welcome. As far as the actual work, it has been a little bit of a learning curve, as I am having to get used to the new programs and technology I am having to use. I am learning how much truly goes into keeping the company moving forward. It was rewarding being able to complete my first project, especially knowing that it could affect our business decisions in the future. I am excited to work on more projects throughout the summer, and learn as much as I can.
Jonathan Schaffer University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Accounts Receivable
Ever since I got here everyone has been very helpful and willing to answer every question I’ve had. Learning how all of the programs work in my department was a quick learning curve, but someone was always there to help when I needed it. Working with the guest team has been a lot of fun. Our meetings having produced many good ideas on how we can fix the problem at hand. Everyone has offered ideas that have made us narrow down our plan of action.

Financial Planning & Analysis
First of all, I work with the best people I could imagine. So far, a typical day consists of learning how to receive payments and submit invoices. Cameron, another intern in our department, and I actually just finished our first project. We are learning more and more each day and it has been an amazing experience so far!
Nick Beuchat University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Fuel Accounting
Thus far, I have been really lucky to have been given a great overview of the entire department and the opportunity to experience the day-to-day operations of each team within the department. Through my daily assignments, I feel like am truly helping out. . This “popcorn-style” approach in spending time with each team has really helped me to wrap my head around such an integral department and how each role is just as important as the next.
Ryan Wood University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Miscellaneous Income
The onboarding process has been very smooth with my department. I have been able to meet everyone on the project team in my department and get to know them. As a department, we tend to work independently most of the time and get together every few days to make sure everyone is on the same page with current tasks.
Best of luck to this awesome group of interns as they continue to work hard in their departments! In case you missed it, be sure to check out the first intern series blog on our Retail Operations interns.
