Pilot Flying J Health Champion Pete Thomas shares a few reasons why you should trade your sugary soda for bottled water the next time you need to refuel.

1. Water keeps you hydrated

Your body is 60 percent water, so keeping hydrated is important to staying healthy. There’s no one-size-fits-all amount of water the average adult should drink on a daily basis, but six to eight 8-ounce glasses is a good rule of thumb. If you’re sick, or working in a particularly hot climate, then you will want to increase your water intake. Talk to your doctor to help determine the right amount of water for you.

2. Water helps keep you healthy

If you’re feeling tired after long hours on the road, you might be dehydrated. Fatigue is the first symptom of dehydration. Dizziness and lightheadedness are secondary symptoms which we want to avoid on the road.

In addition to keeping you hydrated, drinking plenty of water will help keep your skin clear, your kidneys and digestive tract healthy and your immune system in top-notch condition. Water flushes out toxins, carries nutrition throughout your body and of course, keeps you hydrated. Water also helps prevent conditions such as constipation and kidney stones.

3. Water is better than soda

Sodas increase your risk for obesity, diabetes and other health problems. Sugary drinks are filled with empty calories that are often the culprit behind those extra pounds. Water is a zero-calorie alternative that can help keep your body healthy.

So the next time you need a break, grab a couple waters. Your body will be happy you did.
